Second generation computer (1956–1963) - Transistor

replaced vacuum tubes with transistors, which were invented in 1947 at Bell Labs by physicists John Bardeen, Walter Brattain, and William Shockley. These three scientists shared the 1956 Nobel Prize in Physics for this invention, which made computers smaller, faster, and more reliable.

Shift from machine language to assembly and early high-level languages (FORTRAN, ALGOL, COBOL).Significantly smaller, faster, and more energy-efficient than 1st generation, but still required air conditioning.
